Abstract

This introduction of a special issue of Romance Quarterly is a brief review of Álvaro Félix Bolaños's (1955-2007) life as scholar and colleague. It underlines several milestones in Bolaños's scholarly activities, such as his three published books and a manuscript that he was working on. It also discusses his ethical values and critical point of view regarding the so-called Hispanism. It introduces the articles included in this special issue: one written by Bolaños, another about his academic life, and three more that explore different expressions and motifs of the Spanish American indigenous people's colonial past, the main field of Bolaños's expertise and specialization. Finally, it acknowledges the participation of Bolaños's family, friends, and colleagues in all the different events dedicated to his valuable human and scholarly legacy. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
